Fashion Mysteries Solved

WHERE CAN I GET THAT?!

Have you ever seen someone on TV or on the streets, fallen in love over their outfits and pondered over where you could find the same thing? Where Did She Get It? is a website devoted to answering that very question. The idea is simple. A user can either upload, email or send via iPhone a picture of an outfit. From there, the community can help you figure out where a dress/bag/pair of shoes is from! This website is just tres cool. Very, very smart.

The only downfall? It's incredibly New York oriented, with constant references to exclusively New York stores. Maybe it'll turn up for other cities soon?

TARGET + ALEXANDER MCQUEEN!

I'm so sad I don't live in the States. First, I miss all the real excitement of the election, and now, awesome designer digs at Target?

Basically, Alexander McQueen in collaborating with Target, much like Converse did (my basic Chucks came from Target, I'm not ashamed).

"The result is very funky rock’n’roll pieces which include studded jeans, and leather vests with a touch of menswear. The wow factor of the collaboration? Dresses! They are signature McQueen with clean and sharp lines."

...I'm all for that! The collection, called "McQ" debuts March 1st and is supposed to range from $30 to $50 - tres exciting. Now I need to find a reason to travel State-side and visit a Target...

I recently found out that I own a Miu Miu knockoff bag - the Coffer. I loved my bag before I realized it's origins, and my appreciation for it has only grew. Interestingly enough, if I had seen it on the arm of the likes of Mischa Barton before actually buying the bag, I don't think I would've been intrigued by the celebrity favourite.

Really, I just picked it up on impulse because I had decided the day before that I wanted a new bag, and the store I bought it at had a "Buy One Get One Free" deal. So a friend and I both got a Coffer replica.

And then, I saw the bag in another store's window last week. I thought it was strange that these stores would imitate each other, or that they had the same manufacturer. But after asking around, I found out that it wasn't just any bag design. Somehow, I appreciate my lovely impulse buy even more now.

Here's to dishing out less than $30 on a bag that could've run me upwards of $1000!

so instead of studying...

i have an exam at 11:30AM.

but uhm...instead of studying (STUDYING! BAH! who does that?), i`m searching for a new phone.

yes, i realize i have a phone already - my beloved baeley, my motorola Q9H - but baeley`s broken. not necessarily to the point of unusable, but with a broken spacebar, it makes typing very hard. & we all know i love text messaging (if you don`t know that, you should know that).

so i`m searching for a new smartphone.

my best friend wants me to get a blackberry, which i would do, but of blackberries, i really only like his phone - the bold - & i don`t necessarily want to get the same phone as him. so what to do? what to do?

tell me, readers, what should i get?

Failsafe night

Forewarning: this post is just built to fail since all words are unfit in describing the indescribable events that went down last night. The words awesome, epic, stupendous, sublime, fall terribly short in explaining the time between 7-12AM on November 13, 2008. Lives were saved, asses were shook and only good times were to be had. Usually I'd erupt in a rant describing how bad my grammar is by now but honestly NOTHING makes sense anymore other than Andrew McMahon's voice.

So instead of further killing last nights experience with words I'll bestow upon you photographic proof of Andrew's awesomeness.

Megs' outfit/reactions (before, right after concert, 20 minutes after)

Notice the glow left on megs face right after the concert, notice it still being there 20 minutes after. She never stopped smiling in the 20 minutes in between the latter two pictures being taken. HECK she's still smiling as you read this, for she was touched by divinity in the form of a Jack's Mannequin concert.

Me (before the concert)

So in the picture on the left you see me, possessed with inner demons, unloved, etc. Ever since I was a child doctors guessed my face would be stuck like this forever, even house couldn't help me. Little did they know the wonders of Andrew McMahon's voice and lyrics...

(After)
Proof is in the picture.
Walking away content with the world.
Just another believer.

So I'll end the post with two of my favorite songs of the night

Epic

As I was reading Steph's AndrewMcMahoncentric post, I was shocked to find out that she forgot to put up his most EPIC song to date. And so, I give to you the beautiful, the heartwrenching, the amazing, the superlong Konstantine, an Andrew song from Something Corporate.

Also after reading Steph's post, I found my self shocked that she thought so highly of The Glass Passenger. However, she convinced me to give it a second try, and the honesty Andrew gets to is pretty freaking awesome. Throughout highschool, Something Corporate's "Leaving Through the Window" was the CD I played again and again, so seeing Andrew live on Thursday will be an AMAZING experience. Can't wait! We'll try to document as best we can of course :)

---

In other news, I recently did a couple job interviews for Club Monaco. Talk about epic right? Okay, well, it's epic for me. I personally love the classic look of the store. As I walked into the store, I was elated. It would be amazing to work in a place that's just so fashionable. The detailing, structure and quality of Club Monaco has me in awe. It's fantastic.

The interviews themselves seemed to go pretty well. The manager seemed really cool and really chill, and asked me about editting my highschool newspaper. It was fun. The second interview with the district manager was even more fun. It was a group interview, which I'm not usually too great at, but I think I did pretty well.

The best part was when she asked us each to pick out an outfit from around the store that exemplified our style. She gave us ten minutes, and I think I did really well. I chose a top much like the American Apparel shirt to the left, except it was more structured - I'd love to own it. I paired it with a black A-line skirt that had white detailing running up it. I also picked up a gold necklace with black jewels and a gold skinny belt to pull it all together. As a finishing touch, I chose a black clutch with a jewel on it.

Although I don't think I got the job because I haven't yet been called, it was the most fun I had at an interview so far. Tell me about your epic job interviews!

lovelovelove,
Megs

P.S. Happy Rememberance Day! It's important, seriously.

Confession of a Serial (Time) Killer

It's the busiest time of the academic year and here I go frittering away my time. It really is hard for me to turn down a good time with friends or inane acts like painting my nails, making music playlists, counting how many steps it takes to get places. When I finally get my ass to the computer I'm distracted by sites like these:

Sleeveface - full of people augmenting parts of their bodies anywhich way with record sleeves to create an illusion. 15 minutes wasted, easy.

Contemporary Mix of Genius - This blog title explains what it's about, Pure Genius of the Contemporary sort. Purge what you've learned from dusty old textbooks and enlighten yourself with CMOG.

Cool hunter - A site full of bad ass styles and trends from all over the world.

Sidereel - If the above sites haven't RPG-ed my time to hell, this site surely will. This is where I get my tv show and movie fix. Just watched a season of the UK office and "the science of sleep".

Well I can continue forever on the sites I routinely visit, but along with my great talent at avoiding school work, I was gifted with a short attention span & terrible grammer. So here's a little playlist dealing with time. What's a Steph post without a themed music playlist?

Time after time - Matchbox twenty

Time stops
- teenage fanclub

Time to pretend - MGMT

Time for the future
- Men Women & Children

Is this the last time? - Spoon

This is the last time - Keane

Mix monday: Andrew McMahon

So I'm hyperventilating thinking about seeing Andrew McMahon live this Thursday with Megs. I've been on a cleansing diet of only Something Corporate and Jack's mannequin for days now. I can totally imagine me being one of those fat girls crying in the crowd in utter awe of meeting one of their idols, like one of those moms at a Clay Aiken concert. This frightens me so, but I can only imagine Megs trepidation of having me beside her.

So when I first heard "Glass Passenger", Jack's mannequins newest release, I kind of loathed it. I found it to be sub-par and not as raw, as I was use to from Something Corporate, and not as catchy as Jack's mannequins previous album "Everything in Transit". Yet after a couple more skims I came to see how beast epic the new album really is. I mean he pretty much left SoCo because he was writing songs that didn't suit the band any longer yet I found comfort in "Everything in Transit" since it had traces of SoCo woven in most songs. I just had to get use to his further departure from SoCo in glass passenger & when it comes down to it, the newest album is as raw and in depth (if not more) as the good ole SoCo days and as catchy as Everything in transit.

Now to the mix! Tally-ho!

North
Break Myself - Something Corporate

The Runaway
- Something Corporate

Everything in Transit
Dark Blue - Jack's Mannequin

Into the airwaves - Jack's Mannequin

Glass Passenger
Lullaby - Jack's Mannequin

Bloodshot
- Jack's Mannequin

The elated beyond belief,
Steph

mix monday: pwnage

So the most intense 7 minutes of my week went down yesterday, I played the lead roll in an epic verbal argument/fight. This all happened at the end of a longggg 9 hour work orientation, my boss was there and therefore no punches were thrown but tears were shed. Skipping the minor logistics of how or why the confrontation occurred. The important thing was I had the: (1) opposing fellow in tears apologizing (2) Respect derived by fear/awe from my coworkers and supervisor. all accomplished in 7 minutes flat.

In light of that event I thought pure ownage should be the theme for this Mix monday and I also felt it would be a great way to sport a half naked Brad pitt, when he was hot.

Golden brown - the stranglers
If you've seen snatch, you may remember this song. What happened yesterday could have been summed up in this scene from the movie. I was Mickey, the other guy played the big lummox in that scene and with my sharp wit I pretty much soul bombed him to hell. True story.

Move Bitch - Ludacris
This song always awakens some demons in me, giving me a great need to mow down some proverbial ho's as I ride pubic transit...

Never wanted to Dance - Mindless self indulgence
Simply posting some mindless self indulgence to post this picture of their bassist. If she isn't the sex, I do not know what is. Picture off their myspace.

Saved by Strangers - Die Mannequin
Last but not least Die Mannequin. The word 'pwnage' was pretty much made to describe Die Mannequin. If I had a soundtrack going on in the background of my life I would defintely have some Die Mannequin playing during the most pivotal times, i.e car chases, time deadline scenarios, fight scenes.

i think blogger hates me

i lost an entire post, due to blogger hating me.
ergh.
i guess that can`t be helped.

&...well...i guess i`m just tired from all the school work.

so, here, for now : enjoy my
birthday wishlist
which is almost as good as having my christmas wishlist.
[anyhow, i won`t end up getting most of those things for my birthday, so the majority will end up on my christmas wishlist.]

i`m also craving - yes, CRAVING - faded denim.
blame it on denimology.
i love this site for it`s denim-y goodness.

OUR 100TH POST CONTEST IS STILL ON.
today is supposed to be the last day (01 november), but maybe i can talk the other SOS girls into extending it?
we`re still waiting on entries from you lovelies.

i want this jacket.

isn`t it gorgeyporgey?
i know it won`t do anything against a cold ontario winter, but...still.
[NOTE: JEZZABELLE offers a 10% discount to SOS readers, using the code sideorderofstyle, so it`s worth checking out.]

alright lovely readers,
i have a psychology textbook to make out with read, so i`ll leave you to your day.

HAPPY BEGINNING OF NOVEMBER!

mka love!

The number one thing on my Christmas list right now?

Influence, the coffee-table book compiled by the Olsen twins featuring interview from the likes of Karl Lagerfeld as well as personal photos of the twins.
I've already detailed my love for the Olsens, and well, I'm absolutely gushing over this book. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

An excerpt:

KL: [N]owadays you start to model because you're young. Now the girls are sixteen, seventeen, fifteen, and Russian. They are like from another planet
AO: They can look very bizarre!
KL: I hate all these tall women. They are all giants!
MKO: If only I were a little taller — that would make me happy!
KL: You are one meter fifty-one. You are taller than that?
AO: We're five feet and one inch.
KL: Oh, I thought my office told me that you were four-foot eight or something. Not that it matters. What you need is a face. If you have a face you don't need height or a voice. Models know this; that's why the good ones don't need to talk much.

I'm gushing right now - you can't get much more awesome.

...Is anything on your Christmas list yet?

EDIT
never mind. it`s working fine now. seriously, that was weird.

HERE ARE MY THEME TUESDAY PICS! (finally!)
they were taken with my motorola q cellphone camera, so they`re all 2-megapixelly, but still...here they are, in all their glory.

i got to "be" jenny (okay, not be...but you know what i mean) for theme tuesday.

of course, what does that entail?

-colour clash love
-bright tights
-a sort of 'high street meets high fashion' type of look

we all know jenny isn`t rich like the rest of the UESers, but she tries her best to always look like she belongs (we know she does). she makes a lot of her clothes, & i wish i could have hand-crafted what i was wearing, but...no. sadly not.

[serena van der woodsen, blair waldorf & jenny humphrey. only pay attention to jenny in this photo. this was the best i could find to showcase what i was kinda thinking.]

i look kinda dead, but that`s because it was pretty late at night. i realize now that i matched the bed. i didn`t know that.

oh, don`t i look cool with my cellphone? :b that was sarcasm, by the way. i love my cellphone though!

pink legs! :D

a close up on all the little bits, so you can see it all.

[white hat, h&m; purple trapeze jacket, stitches outlet; turquoise cardigan, pacific mall; dark green tanktop, suzy shier; black, white & grey polkadot-print bubble skirt, value village (BNWT from costa blanca!); fuschia tights, ardenes; black & grey flats, ardenes; black NYC strand tote (not pictured), the new york city strand; black patent leather maryjanes heels (not pictured), payless shoe source.]

on a random side note: i actually did not wear those flats. i wore my black patent heels. they were hawt.

oh, i watched nick & norah -
for those of you who are planning to watch it, WATCH IT NOW.
it`s a really good movie.
i must say that if only michael cera had played the left-handed guitar...i woulda melted & drooled all over.
because he didn`t, i stayed pretty intact. but still.

enjoy your weekend, loveries<3

hello, hello! :)

Hi all, I'm Maegan, and as you can see from Jae's interview, I'm new to the blog. As I checked the blog today, I realized my introduction was missing any pictures...so Steph insisted I do an outfit post - exciting, right?

Dress - American Apparel Bandeau Pencil Dress, Retail $41
T-Shirt - Ardene, 2/$10
Scarf - Ardene, $14.99 BOGO
Hat - H&M Kids, $6.90
Sweater - H&M, $19.90
Tights - Urban Planet - $4.99?

This is pretty much my outfit for Nuit Blanche/Nick & Norah night planned in advance, with my lovely sick-for-days face, when I rarely ever get sick. Oh, and I'll be wearing my fantastic imitation suede ankle boots, also from Ardene ($30, BOGO)

And If you haven't noticed, I'm holding the samples for Gwen Stefani's latest fragrance line - Harajuku Lovers. "G" smells awesome, seriously, pass by your nearest Shoppers Drug Mart and take a whiff. Since I'm sick, I haven't had the chance to fully smell all the other fragrances yet, but I can't waaaait hahah...

Til next time!

With love, angels, and music, baby

"you`ve got it goin on"

i sit here, hiding away from the world & yes, that`s right, playing hooky (don`t follow my example), BUT...holding a cute little card with five tubes of perfume attached to it. on the bottom of the card are cute little caricatures in super-deformed anime-style. the tubes proudly display, in different colours: LOVE, LIL ANGEL, G, MUSIC, & BABY.

super cute.

they are my cute little samples, & i`m dying to try them all out, all at once, in a fragranced-psychedelical (yes, i made that term up) whirlwind of awesome.

but i won`t.

instead, i give you...THREE FACTS OF THE DAY.

i)jae learned html from working on an asian avenue page back in grade seven, eight & nine. by grade ten, "AA" was obsolete.

ii) capsaicin, the stuff that makes peppers spicy, is used as a natural lip plumper (careful not to use too much). try using regular ground pepper at first for a little pout. some people actually use a bottled form of dilute capsaicin & dab a little on their lips. mint also works too, but not as well.

iii) perfume should be dabbed onto the parts of your body where major arteries can be found, because those areas heat up the fastest & therefore your body`s natural oils will mix with the perfume easier & release the fragrance into the air. elbows, behind the knee & of course, the neck, are all places where one wouldn`t normally think to dab perfume...but try it out for yourself. other places include: behind the ears, in cleavage, the small of the back, the nape of the neck (underneath your ponytail), the ankles & the belly button.

& of course, why would i leave you without a song of the day to go with my three facts?

in honor of the fragrance samples...
GWEN STEFANI, 4 in the Morning
YOUTUBE VIDEO LINK
i love how glam gwen looks. she is amazing.

PS. a note about theme tuesday this week:
we didn`t dress up yesterday. tomorrow (thursday) is the one year death anniversary of somebody very close to me, & we decided that in her honor, we would wear yellow on that day (yellow is her colour). so...thursday, 25 september...wear YELLOW please. anything yellow.

kisses & hiding,

trooping.

so yes, i am sick. i awoke this morning with a cold, & it has escalated into a sore throat, with occasional twingey pains in my head.

but i will soldier on!

i`ve been thinking a lot about tops lately. it occurred to me that i wear a lot of tees & tanks, which is fine, but very basic. i actually started lusting for something flowy the other day, even tho i realized that summer is coming to a close & autumn is on the horizon.

so i did a quick internet search, of flowier tops i would love to own.

the first top, the madame butterfly blouse by french connection (found at jezzabelle.com) is one top that i think i`d like. i can see it dressed up or dressed down. for me, definitely would wear it with my skinny jeans & black cropped blazer, maybe with a belt wound around it. it`s not too voluminous, which can present problems for some.

the second top, the ruffle-neck top from old navy is also a nice choice for me. though not as flowy & airy as the first blouse, it still fits in with what i`m looking for.

these two tops, from urban outfitters, are cute. the kimchi blue sunburst tunic (the first one) is simple but with enough detail to look unique. plus, as per my criteria, it is just flowy enough to pass, but can also look phenom with a belt.

the second, the cotton smock, i somehow envisioned buying a size or two larger than my size, so that it is just a bit longer...then maybe mutilating the bottom with extra garter so it`s flowy everywhere else but the bottom. hm.

i`m still searching, but these are the few that caught my eye the most.

also, as an additional note - the first top, from jezzabelle, is on sale right now. i wish i had the money [DARNED STUDENT BUDGET!] because i would get it. for anyone who is lusting after it as much as me, SoSers have their own discount at jezzabelle - just input coupon code SideOrderofStyle & get ten percent off! how lucky are we? & how unlucky am i that i don`t have money?

hm. sigh.

THEME TUESDAY PICTURES WILL BE UP THIS TUESDAY!

stay tuned for a very late announcement of tuesday`s theme.

& now, for me to get to bed. darned 8AM classes!

love,
-jae

slight obsession.

can we really call it 'slight' still?

see, it all started with ROCKBAND.
my character, lovingly named jae (after moi!), looked exactly like a thinner version of me in every little bit. with layered black hair, pouty lips, winged eyeliner & a mean-looking double-necked guitar (which i don`t actually possess...to my chagrin), she was exactly like me.
except she lacked one thing.
standing there in the rock shop, looking fierce as a tiger, she was almost exactly me except she wore no glasses.

:O

to rectify this, i ran to the accessories section of the shop & tried on a dozen different kinds of glasses on her. i liked them all. so i spent hard-earned cash, money i had played a dozen gigs for, just to buy her all the glasses & sunglasses that she could ever want or need.

it was at that moment that i decided that, like my character in rockband, i could use glasses as accessories for myself.
after all, why not?
unlike most people who are FORCED to wear glasses & hate them, i love them! prescription or not, glasses are actually a lot more fun for me than they are for others. & more so when i would slip my contacts into my eyes & then be able to wear sunglasses too...i figured, why stop at sunglasses? why not collect a gamut of other glasses, non-prescription & lensless, to fill out my glasses-wardrobe ?

this is just the beginning of it, i`m sure.

to begin :

[WITH LENS: from top to bottom (newest to oldest) : black & pink non-prescription glasses, from ardenes ; eggplant & blue prescription glasses, from woodside optical.]

[SUNGLASSES: from top to bottom (newest to oldest) : black wayfarers, from ardenes ; golden aviators, from bluenotes ; silver aviators, from blue notes ; leopard-ish print wayfarers, from bluenotes ; trusty old black sunnies, from ricki`s.]

[LENSLESS GLASSES: from top to bottom (newest to oldest) : black, from dollarama ; blue, from dollarama ; grey, from dollarama ; giant-buggies (used to be sunglasses), bluenotes ; purple + rhinestones, lost-&-found @ camp.]

the lensless ones are the best. everyone talks about them because...well..until you look closely, they don`t look like they`re lensless. i love them. they`re almost controversial. plus, i am planning on getting non-prescription lenses put in them. it`s amazing. & the best part is...most of the frames i have were only about a dollar from the dollar store. super cheap, yes, but also means i can buy a lot more.

when popping lenses out of glasses, do it from the inside to the out. that is, put your thumbs on the side of the glass/plastic that would be closest to your eyes if you were wearing them, & then push out. it`s easier, apparently. it takes a bit of practice, but it`s well worth it.
also remember that the lower the prescription, the thinner the lens, thus the easier it is to remove the lens.

HOW TO WEAR LENSLESS GLASSES
rock them. just plain & simple...rock them. wear them like you mean it. if people ask, don`t hesitate to tell them where you bought them. don`t hesitate to show them that they`re frames. if they try to poke your eyes, reach out & poke theirs first!

ignore the haters who will tell you that only wannabes wear lensless glasses. after all, the same argument could be used that only sailors like nautical clothes, that only debs like pearls, that only dominatrixes wear sky-high stiletto boots, etc.

yeah. in my book, it is definitely cooler than cool to rock lensless glasses.

after all, not everyone can pull off glasses. so if you can, why not?

kisses,
jae :)

[ps: i closed up my livejournal & opened up my own personal blog. it can be found here! (clickyclicky)
please note that i will be working on both this blog & ABOJ, not abandoning one for the other.]

death: "it`s actually a funny story."

went to a funeral yesterday. well, a viewing. the burial is taking place today. or took place already. not quite sure.
anyhow, this past while i`ve been supremely bummed out - unable to think of anything but that summer is coming to an end. can`t even blog anything. everytime i think i`m coming up with a good blog post, i scrap it. then i tell you all that i`m coming up with something new, ask for your input, & then scrap it again.
well...not scrap, per se. but that back-burner is sure looking pretty darn full.

the lady who died lived til the age of seventy-one, had six children & about ten grandchildren, & lived a pretty full life. i didn`t know her personally, but i do know her daughter, who is just a bit older than my older brother (he`s a quarter of a century already) & has the cutest baby.

her baby boy has no eyebrows. but i`m sure they`ll grow in someday.

so i didn`t cry - i could have, it was a rare day that i wasn`t wearing any contacts - but i did feel ultimately bad. i mean, i can imagine how horrible it would feel to lose my mother.

did i mention yesterday was my mother`s birthday too? HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM (she`s half a century now).

at the funeral, i did note that most of the girls there had luscious, pin-straight long hair. not necessarily black (their natural hair colour), but still - gorgeous.
made me miss my long hair.
why is it that i always want long hair when i cut it, & short hair when it`s long? i`m never satisfied.

school is coming back.
one more week of lazing around, doing absolutely nothing but strumming out random chords on the guitar & sleeping. i feel like i haven`t accomplished much.
on the other hand, my best ideas for the blog come during school.
so expect to see a return to posts.
ACTUAL posts.
yike.

lately, i`ve found myself obsessed with (sun)glasses.
i know that a lot of us who wear them absolutely hate them, but i find i look so much better in glasses than without. i bought some non-prescription glasses at ardene`s (i`ll be wearing them a lot at school for sure, so you`ll see them in some outfit pictures for sure later on), & i`ve got a pair of reading glasses with funky little rhinestones - i wanna get the lenses changed on those. plus, i`m beginning to amass a collection of sunglasses. i`m going to need to buy some more contacts, aren`t i?

also, my sephora catalogue came in the mail, chock full of makeup ideas & all that good stuff. it`s all 'fall' stuff, but i couldn`t resist sitting in front of my mirror playing around & shading my eyes in grey & blue & dousing my lips in wine-coloured lipstick.
i haven`t worn lipstick in a while.

this post is pretty darn random.

i want a new phone.
if anyone loves me out there, please buy me an unlocked motorola moto q9h.
pretty please, with sugar on top?

a quick moment to point it out...

hi all! it`s ... *checks time* ... 4:15 AM, & i am still up.
i will sleep soon, i promise!

i just wanted to point out to everyone that i got hippity-hip, groovy-baby with the times & i got a twitter account.
i guess because i love status updates.
facebook status updates don`t do it for me, mainly because i prefer to stay cryptic on facebook, so most of my updates on it are music lyrics.

however i plan on using & abusing twitter.

here is my twih-tah!

you can view my latest updates off to the side, underneath all the links -> --> --->

please, feel free to follow me, & let me know your twitters so i can follow you too. [like the little creeper i am.]

as well, since i mentioned facebook here, feel free to find me & add me if you`d like!
